Bio-based polyethylene

Bio-based? Of course!

“Bio-based” means that the material is made, in whole or in part, from renewable resources. Our bio-based polyethylene (PE) is made from certified second-generation renewable resources, or renewable raw materials that do not compete with food production. Second-generation biomass is extracted from plant residues from agriculture and forestry, among other sources. The material we use is extracted from waste streams generated by the wood industry, used cooking oil and residues from vegetable oil. The material is certified according to REDcert². This certification system lays down strict rules for traceability and includes a control chain based on a mass balance system.

Our bio-based polyethylene has a bio-origin. Though non-compostable, it is 100% recyclable.

Why choose a packaging or carrier bag made of bio-based polyethylene?

Bio-based polyethylene has the same physical and chemical properties as conventional PE, which means that packaging or carrier bags made from bio-based PE have exactly the same appearance and carrying, tensile and wet strength as packaging and carrier bags made from traditional PE. Besides the advantages of traditional PE, bio-based polyethylene offers a number of additional environmental benefits:

  • Bio-based PE is produced from renewable resources, leading to lower greenhouse gas emissions compared to virgin PE production from fossil resources.

  • The use of renewable raw materials leads to savings on fossil resources.

  • The use of bio-based polyethylene contributes to a circular economy, where materials and products are reused and recycled as much as possible to minimise waste production and revalorise valuable raw materials.
